When applying lacquer to lacquerware, it needs to be coated over and over again to build up layers. However, there are some cases where a synthetic coating material is used instead of lacquer.

 

You should not reject a synthetic coating material just because “it’s not natural”. You can make lacquerware coated using a synthetic coating material stand out depending on how you use it.

 

Learning a coating material through white-coated lacquerware
Lacquerware is mainly black or vermillion in color. But, there are other lacquer colors available such as yellow, blue, and green. Originally, lacquer is a semi-translucent brownish color. The desired colors of lacquer are created by adding pigments (colored minerals) to this.

 

However, there is one color that is not possible to make with natural lacquer. That is white. The white color cannot be created if even the tiniest amount of other color is mixed into the lacquer.

 

As mentioned earlier, the original color of lacquer contains brown. Thus, a sparkling white color can never be produced no matter how much white pigment you add to the original lacquer. If you try making white lacquer with natural lacquer, it turns out to be cream color. Even though it is called white lacquer, it can never be completely white.

 

But, this will limit the range of the artist’s expression. So, an idea to create white lacquer with the use of a synthetic coating material was conceived. A synthetic coating material can create any color. So, it is possible to make sparkling white lacquerware, which cannot be produced by natural lacquer.

 

The differences between lacquer and synthetic coating material
Lacquer is coated on an object over and over again to build layers. Thus, it takes time and effort, which makes it expensive. But, because of this, lacquerware’s distinctive look is enhanced with use.

 

In the case where natural lacquer is used, it might gradually change color. For example, black lacquerware might turn to gray. This adds a distinctive look to the lacquerware, but some people do not enjoy this color change. The color is created by adding pigments to lacquer, so it can decolorize depending on the conditions.

 

In that regard, a synthetic coating material will not change color. The same color is maintained forever. It saves the trouble of applying multiple layers of coatings like lacquer. It also enables mass production, so it helps in lowering the price.

 

Furthermore, if natural lacquer is used, it is necessary to guard against ultraviolet light as well as heat. But, if a synthetic coating material is used, you do not have to worry about either of those. Because of this, in most cases, there should not be any problems when using lacquerware in a microwave oven. In terms of ease in handling, a synthetic coating material is much better.

 

As explained above, a synthetic coating material has the advantages that “it can create colors that cannot be produced by natural lacquer,” “it can lower the price,” and “it is easy to handle.” Additionally, you can add value to it by “supplementing lacquerware with an anti-skid capability”, etc. Natural lacquer is great, but some lacquerware can only be created by using a synthetic coating material.

 

Synthetic coating material is sprayed when applying. Spray applicators that deliver the coating at high pressures are used to add color to lacquerware.
